Middle Schoolers Wage War to Help The Poor
March 20, 2009
|
ACA middle schoolers can’t lose. Although only one team will win first place in this week’s Change War, everyone will come out on top when their money is given to build houses for needy families in Mexico. Every morning before school, students line up to throw money into large containers, designated by team. Coins earn positive points; bills earn negative; all money goes toward building houses. Excitement, camaraderie, and competition punctuate the giving. Students eagerly bring coins by the handful, bag, or bottle—and triumphantly drop negative bills into their enemy’s buckets. Competition among team leaders is fierce. Smitty and Scholma have resorted to what some consider underhanded schemes and tactics. Breckley daily dumps a weighty bag of pennies into her team’s bucket; Gordenier coaches and cajoles his team into the Top Three every day; and Wojo and Langley have created an arch-rivalry that has the morning crowd in an uproar. A determined group of students counts the coins collected every day. Totals are combined with monies raised at RCS, and team standings are announced daily during sixth period. A final tally and winning team will be announced next Tuesday afternoon. |
Students Make Math a Game
Feb. 10, 2009
Carissa Constantine and Jackie Gerth, both Juniors in Mrs. Nattress' math class, are the creators of "Retail Therapy," a board game focused on honing your math skills and satisfying your shopping craving. The girls created the game to fulfill an assignment in Mrs. Nattress' class. "Jackie and I are in love with shopping," said Carissa.

The game was built on on a trivial pursuit board and has a monopoly feel to it. Each player starts with $1,000. The goal is to buy as many stores as you can. To earn more shopping money, players must correctly answer a math question. The player who acquires 10 stores and lands in the mall first, wins.
The students are in the process of submitting their game to a game company for publication.
